2021 Mercedes AMG E53 Coupe
For this week’s review we’ve gotten our hands on the 2021 Mercedes AMG E53 Coupe which is a straight 6 engine an electric supercharger and a mild hybrid!
Disclosure: Mercedes Benz Canada provided me with the 2021 Mercedes AMG E53 Coupe for a week to test drive, and photograph. All photos in this blog post was taken by me. #MercedesAMGE53
ACCELERATION: 9/10
3.0L inline-6 turbo engine with mild hybrid drive and electric auxiliary compressor
429 HP @ 6100 / 384 lb-ft @ 1800
9 Speed AMG Speedshift TCT
0-100km in 4.0 seconds
BRAKING: 7.5/10
172 ft to stop from 70 mph to 0
HANDLING: 8.5/10
For a big and heavy car it handles really well
RIDE: 8.5/10
Shifts very smooth and no turbo lag
Engine on/off is barely noticeable!
Suspension is pretty comfortable for a sporty coupe
ECONOMY: 8.5/10
24/21/28 MPG (City/Highway/Combined)
CABIN NOISE: 7.5/10
Can get a little noisy with the exhaust, engine and tires
EXTERIOR: 9/10
B-pillar less design with windows down looks super cool
Front end grill looks sportier and aggressive from the 2019 version I tested prior
INTERIOR FOR DRIVER: 8.25/10
Seats are pretty comfortable and lots of legroom in the front
Crackles and pops when driving
Has a bit of blind spot in the rear 3/4 view because of the thick pillar but overall good visibility
I’m not a huge fan of the stressing wheel controls being a glossy material and two little chopsticks across. It doesn’t feel as substantial as the previous design. I personally found the last gen wheel much easier to use but maybe with more time it will be fine!
INTERIOR FOR PASSENGERS: 7/10
Rear seating is limited 2 passengers as the cupholder is built into the middle seat. There’s a fairly large hump in the middle
Front passenger has lots of legroom
Rear Passengers won’t be as lucky with legroom or headroom!
I find it a pretty tricky to get out of the car from the rear. I’m so used to just grabbing onto the B-pillar and pulling myself out but since it’s just a glass window one of your passengers may grab when getting out and crack it
INTERIOR STORAGE:7/10
Power lift trunk
Has a hook to hang bags
Both sides have a netted area tout small items to prevent it from rolling around the trunk
OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE 2021 Mercedes amg e53 coupe:
The Mercedes AMG E53 may not have the grumbly and violent V8 but it’s still got ferocious power while looking elegant. It’s a proper coupe with 2 doors not like some coupes with 4 doors. It’s quick and gets the power out to the ground efficiently thanks to electric supercharger that draws in air and adds power to the turbo charger to let it spool up faster to minimize lag. The handling is balanced. It feels safe to drive fast!
One thing this does extremely well is that it has character and feels special.
