2019 Mercedes-Benz A220 Sedan

For this week’s review we’ve gotten our hands on the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A220 Sedan. It is the cheapest Benz you can buy

Disclosure: Mercedes Benz Canada provided me with the 2019 A220 Sedan for a week to test drive, and photograph. All photos in this blog post was taken by me. #MercedesBenzA220

ACCELERATION: 8.25/10

  • 2.0L I4 Turbo - 188 HP @ 5800 / 221 lb-ft @ 1600

  • AWD

  • 7-speed dual-clutch automatic

  • 7.2 second 0-100 km/hr

BRAKING: 8/10

  • Pretty good braking ability but results will vary depending on how wide of a tire you go with

HANDLING: 8/10

  • It’s light curb weight helps it feel nimble.

RIDE: 7/10

  • Suspension feels a bit on the stiff side paired with the seat cushion material not being that soft affects the ride quality for long distance driving.

ECONOMY: 7/10

  • 25/33/29 MPG (City/Highway/Combined)

  • Unfortunately premium gas is required. Would be nice if the entry level budget option could use regular gas.

CABIN NOISE: 8/10

  • Very little road and engine noise in the cabin on good roads but I’ve seen YouTube videos where it’s on bad road conditions and there is a lot of road noise inside.

EXTERIOR: 8/10

  • It has the latest design language from Mercedes. Overall it looks really nice from the front. Looking at the rear it feels a bit generic though.

  • The front headlights has an aggressive style.

INTERIOR FOR DRIVER: 10/10

  • If you got into this car without knowing it’s the entry level vehicle there is no way you would know that. Everything about it looks like an S or E class for the initial impression. Of course if you take a closer look it won’t be the same premium materials as a S class but Mercedes does an amazing job making it look premium

  • The other wow factor is the dual screens that look high res and is running their latest infotainment system, MBUX.

  • Adaptive cruise and lane keep assist is amazing how good it works. Super useful in traffic jams or boring drives.

  • In my opinion, the interior is class leading and is the entry level sedan to beat in the premium segment.

INTERIOR FOR PASSENGERS: 7.5/10

  • Rear headroom feels better than the CLA since it has a more traditional sedan roof line instead of a coupe style one.

  • Legroom is decent considering this is a compact sedan.

  • Seating two passengers at the back will be fine but 3 would be a tight fit as there’s a hump in the middle.

INTERIOR STORAGE: 7.75/10

  • 8.6 Cu Ft

  • The company’s Cu Ft measurements seem strange. It feels a lot bigger and practical than the numbers suggest!

  • No spare tire under the floor

  • Rear seats can fold down 40/20/40

INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM: 10/10

  • New infotainment system MBUX which uses a voice command like Siri, Google Home and Amazon Alexa

  • Multiple ways to interact with the system; touch screen, center column touch pad, and mini touch pad on steering wheel. You can also use voice command for certain controls.

  • Touch screen is very responsive.

  • Augmented reality navigation is really cool!

  • Center column touch pad has haptic feedback to let you know you’ve successfully swiped to the next selection

  • Supports Android Car Play and Apple Car Play

  • Something I noticed in Apple Car Play is that you can still play with your phone and use other apps and not have the Maps disappear on the screen. In other cars, if you try to use your phone, Apple Car Play will go back to the home screen

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE 2019 mercedes-benz a220 sedan:

Mercedes-Benz A220 Sedan is like a baby S-Class overloaded with tech. It may be the cheapest Benz you can buy but you wouldn’t know sitting in it. The A220 is the first Benz to get the latest tech and design language seen in their S-class models. On paper it’s 188 horsepower numbers don’t seem amazing, but in real world regular driving, I never had a thirst for more power. It was always just enough. I’m not sure if that’s thanks to its curb weight or 7 speed dual clutch transmission but 0-100 km in 7.2 seconds for a sub 200 HP car is more than adequate.

The new A-Class truly delivers a true Mercedes-Benz experience without feeling like a cheap car. They’re giving you a lot of car for the money you pay. In my opinion, the new A-Class will most likely attract a lot of younger buyers who are tech savvy and want to own an S-Class but don’t have the capital yet.

The A220 is the entry level luxury sedan under 35 K to beat. The other exciting thing for us Canadians is that the A220 comes in the form of a Sedan and Hatchback! In the US, they’ll only have the Sedan. The only thing to note is, you want to option it out to have all the tech inside, which can get expensive quickly.
