Fresh Mango, Mango Puree, Sago, Rice Ball, and Mango Ice Cream | $9.5

The Flying Rose is a newly open shop specializing in Chinese desserts in the West End. They get hand picked mangoes air mailed from Australia! They're massive, soft and smell amazing. The interior is very cute and our waitress was so friendly! This is a great spot for those who live in the West End and looking to have this type of dessert without having to commute to Richmond.

The being said, beware of anything without mango. The walnut soup with sesame rice dumplings came first. It was thin like soup when the dessert version of this is suppose to have a thick body. The menu did list this as Walnut "Soup" instead of Walnut "Paste" so this just might be how they serve it but personally this didn't hit the spot as we were expecting something else. I think it needs some rice flour to thicken up the soup. The sesame rice dumplings were also on the hard side, not sure if they were frozen or not cooked long enough. We were both so disappointed by this dish and was thinking to not come back.

Then the two mango desserts came out and boy did this save them! The hand picked riped mangoes they air mail paid off. It is some of the tastiest mango we got to try. Since then we've come back on multiple occasions and always ordered mango desserts.  I'm a bit worried to try their other more traditional hot Chinese desserts after the walnut soup.

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE FLYING ROSE:

A must for any mango lovers. The mangoes used here is some of the most delicious I've tasted from a restaurant. I was impressed with their standards to get hand picked riped fruit and have it airmailed directly to them. We would give the mango desserts 9/10 but the Walnut Soup and Sesame Rice Dumplings was more like 5.5/10 which dragged down their overall rating. We'll go back a couple more times and adjust the review to be reflect of the whole menu. The cotton candy is a nice treat! I feel like a kid at a carnival when I get to eat that! The space is pretty spacious, I think this could be a terrific place to do some work while having a dessert. For the time being it's not super busy so you'll have your peace and quiet! If there is anything you love at The Flying Rose and think we should try it next time, feel free to contact us!

The Bad:

  • Hot dessert (walnut soup) was depressing

The Good:

  • Fantastic tasting mango
  • Cute interior design with bright lighting
  • Great service from the owner

Rating: 7.5/10
