Prata Man

Looking for a taste of Singapore without the expensive plane ticket? Prata Man offers just that and is conveniently located in a small Richmond plaza. The chef spent time in Singapore so the cuisine is pretty authentic. The food is best enjoyed family style although they have combos for one.  The interior is very outdated, and mediocre service like most Chinese restaurants but all this is made up for when you taste their signature dish, the Hainanese Chicken Rice.

WHAT WE TRIED:

  • 1/2 Dozen Satay Skewers (Pork, Chicken, & Beef) | $7.95

  • Single Serving Hainanese Chicken with soup & rice | $7.25

  • Curry Beef with Prata Bread | $7.95

The Curry Beef was pretty good. We liked the curry sauce and huge chunks of beef. The curry isn't spicy if you're wondering. The thing lacking is the prata. Unfortunately it's very flat like pancake and there was no flaky texture like other prata we've eaten.

The satay skewers were alright but a tad on the dry side. The peanut dipping sauce was great but we'll probably pass next time.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Hainanese Chicken Rice is often called Singapore's national dish though it origins in Hainan, China. This is the most popular item on the menu. When ordering the dish, it is served with soup, Hainanese rice, and two kinds dipping sauces (a hot chili and diced onion & garlic sauce).

The whole chicken is submerged in stock or water. The secret to making this dish successfully is the temperature, seasoning and duration in the bath. The rice is prepared with the chicken stock used to cook to main dish. The soup had a strong ginger taste. I like ginger but this is a heads up for people who don't enjoy ginger as much.

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF PRATA MAN:

This whole in the wall looking restaurant does one thing really well, and that's alright with us. The star of the show is always the food. We will continue to come here for the Hainanese Chicken Rice dish and we recommend you to try it! We will skip the other dishes we ordered and go with a whole chicken the next time. If there are any dishes you love at Prata Man and think we should try it next time, feel free to contact us

The Bad:

  • Cash only, so make sure you have some before coming.
  • The other dishes were not appealing.

The Good:

  • Authentic representation of Singapore's national dish.
  • Inexpensive and fast.
